Jonestown, Texas — North Shore of Lake Travis

Jonestown, Texas sits on the North Shore of Lake Travis, 40 minutes from Austin. Local guide to the town, The Hollows, and vacation rentals available to book direct.

Jonestown is a small city on the North Shore of Lake Travis, about 40 minutes northwest of Austin. It is where most of the properties we manage are, and it is a genuinely different proposition from staying in the city.

Where it is, and why that matters

Jonestown sits on TX-1431, the road that runs along the north side of Lake Travis between Cedar Park and Lago Vista. The practical effect of that geography: you get lake frontage and Hill Country landscape without the drive being a real commitment. Downtown Austin is around 40 minutes; Austin-Bergstrom airport is about an hour.

It is a small town — a few thousand residents — and it feels like one. There is no nightlife district and no chain-hotel strip. What there is: water, hills, and dark skies.

The Hollows

Most visitors to Jonestown are staying in The Hollows, a 1,400-acre gated community on the lake with a Beach Club, resort pools, a marina, a spa, and a trail network. The homes inside it are privately owned and let as vacation rentals, so guests get resort amenities without a hotel.

If you have seen “Jonestown vacation rental” and “The Hollows” used interchangeably, that is why — the community accounts for a large share of the town’s visitor accommodation.

Beyond The Hollows

Jonestown is not only the resort. Escalon Ranch offers larger hilltop properties with long Hill Country views and more land around them — a quieter, more private proposition. Elsewhere around town there are individual lake houses and hillside homes, many with the same views and none of the community amenity structure.

Which suits you depends on whether you want facilities on your doorstep or space and silence.

What to do

  • On the water — swimming, boating, paddleboarding, and fishing on Lake Travis. See our water level guide before planning a boat day.
  • On foot — Jones Brothers Park sits on the lake, and the trail network inside The Hollows runs for miles.
  • Nearby — golf within a short drive, Hill Country wineries about an hour west along the 290 corridor, and restaurants in Jonestown, Lago Vista, and Cedar Park.
  • Austin — close enough for a day trip, far enough that you are not listening to it at night.

Practical notes

  • Getting around: a car is essential. Distances between the lake communities are short but there is no meaningful public transport.
  • Groceries: the nearest full supermarkets are in Lago Vista and Cedar Park. Worth a stop on the way in.
  • Short-term rental rules: these vary by community and HOA. If you are buying rather than visiting, see our real estate page — it is the most expensive detail to get wrong.
  • Season: summer is busiest and hottest; spring and autumn are the most comfortable; winter is quiet, mild, and the best value.
