The North Shore of Lake Travis
What the North Shore of Lake Travis actually is: which communities it covers, how it differs from the south shore, and where to stay across Jonestown and Lago Vista.
“North Shore of Lake Travis” appears constantly in listings and directions around here, and it is rarely defined. This page defines it.
What it is
The North Shore is the northern shoreline of Lake Travis, running roughly from Jonestown in the east, west through Lago Vista and Point Venture. It is reached from Austin along TX-1431, and that road is effectively the spine of the area.
It is a geographic description rather than an official municipality — there is no “City of North Shore.” It is the way locals distinguish this side of the lake from the south and west shores, which are reached by entirely different roads and have a different character.
The communities
- Jonestown — the eastern end. Home to The Hollows, a 1,400-acre gated resort community, and Escalon Ranch, which offers larger hilltop properties with long views.
- Lago Vista — further west. A residential lake town, and the location of The Island on Lake Travis resort.
- Point Venture — a small peninsula community with its own POA amenities, golf, and lake access.
- Surrounding Travis County — individual lake houses and hillside homes between and around the towns.
How it differs from the south shore
Both sides sit on the same lake, and they are not interchangeable.
The south shore — Lakeway, Bee Cave, Hudson Bend — is closer to Austin, more commercially developed, and busier. More restaurants and shops, more traffic, more people.
The North Shore is quieter and more residential. Accommodation is vacation rentals and resort communities rather than hotels. There is less to walk to and more to look at. Getting here means TX-1431 rather than the Bee Cave corridor, and it feels further from the city than the drive time suggests.
Neither is better. They suit different trips.
What it is like
Hill Country landscape meeting a large reservoir: limestone, cedar and oak, steep ground, and long views over water. Dark skies at night. Summers are hot and centred on the lake; spring and autumn are the best walking weather; winters are mild and quiet.
The lake itself is a reservoir and its level moves through the year — see the water level guide for what that does and does not affect.
Where to stay
Broadly:
- Resort amenities on the doorstep — The Hollows in Jonestown, or The Island in Lago Vista
- Space and privacy — Escalon Ranch, or an individual lake or hillside home
- Community amenities without a resort — Point Venture or Lago Vista, where POA facilities may come with the property
